Savage is a small town in the Minnesota counties of Hennepin, Ramsey and Morrison. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. Savage is located on a bend in the White River, east of Minneapolis. In 1861, after Iowa moved into Indian Territory following its victory over Mexico in the US-Mexican War, General George Armstrong Custer sent his 5th Cavalry Regiment through Sioux Nation lands northeast of present day Savage to clear land for cavalry barracks near Rock Springs where they constructed Fort Custer. In 1865 or 1866 Govt gold coins were discovered in nearby Rochester Township; this led to increased development around that area including new mills and mines which soon produced more than enough gold to finance government expenses without raising prices on goods exported to America. This period also saw rapid growth in farming around town which provided jobs for many local people; Slashdot reports that farm production tripled between 1830 and 1870 despite low levels of rainfall across much of Minnesota due to bad weather patterns caused by Climate Change. Savage, Minnesota was founded in 1858 by Norwegian immigrants. The city was named for Hidetaka Sato, the owner of a fur farm in what is now the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Savage quickly became a thriving settlement and rapidly emerged as the leading grain town in the region. In 1867, Savage was renamed to honor General George Washington Savage, who had fought on the American side during the Mexican-American War. The city's growth continued through the 19th century; by 1860, it had reached a population of 509 people. However, during World War II (1942-1945), Savage experienced significant destruction as part of Nazi Germany's aerial bombing campaign against Great Britain and its allies. As a result of this attack, many residents fled to other parts of Minnesota or Canada; however, around 100 residents remained in Savage until after the war ended. Afterward, Savage slowly regained its former prominence as an agricultural center and grew steadily into its current size – reaching a population of over 910 people by 1990.
