Savage, Minnesota is a small town located in the far northcentral corner of Minnesota. It has a population of just over 1,000 people and it was founded in 1881 by Norwegian immigrants. Today Savage is an industrial town that specializes in the manufacture of firearms and ammunition. The town is home to Savage Arms Company, which manufactures rifles and shotguns. That same year, Congress created Dakota Territory which included part ofMinnesota. In 1862, the Office of Indian Affairs was created within Dakota Territory under authority of Ulysses S. Grant and Sioux Chief Sitting Bull (1813-1890). This office became known as Bureau Of Indian Affairs (BIA) after President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation creating it on August 3rd, 1916. In 1890, when Minnesota joined Kansas as a state, white settlement within Dakota Territory ended and all Native Americans were forced out into reservations west of the Missouri River except for a few scattered tribes who continued to hold some land until 1924 when they were forcibly relocated to newly created Cheyenne and Arapaho Reservations in Wyoming pursuant to Executive Order 9982
