St. Michael, Minnesota is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located about 20 miles east of Minneapolis and 50 miles north of St. Paul. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is home to two universities, both public: Hennepin County Community College and Saint Paul University (formerly known asMinnesota State University). The name "St. Michael" comes from a monastery in Hungary that was founded by an Irishman named Colmcille in the 12th century AD. During World War II, German soldiers took control of the monastery and used it as a concentration camp for Jews until 1945; then it reverted back to Hungarian hands until 1949 when it again fell into German hands until liberated by American forces during the Cold War era. Pope Pius XII visited Sts Michael and All Hallows' Church on October 5, 1954; he consecrated new churches there on November 4 that year with Bishop John Neumann officiating. In 1955 Pope Pius XII designated four monasteries in northwestern Minnesota--Mount Carmel Monastery (near Hibbing), Mount Greylock Monastery (near Duluth), Holy Cross Abbey (near Apple Valley) and Mount Zion Abbey (at Owatonna)--the sites where his Lateran Letter Perpetua would be read each Easter morning from 1951 to 1956 at mass services at each monastery before being distributed throughout North America as gospel tracts or bulletins to be distributed among Catholics living along highways leading thereto]. From 1960-2005 all services were held outside of StMichael's bounds due to limitations placed upon church construction within its confines by city planners who felt that such places could become "swimming pools" for large numbers of people without any real distinction between religious denominations or social strata.] As early as 1846 when Stephen Fenton published his book A Topographical Dictionary ofMN[], he noted that what we now call Ramsey County belonged originally to Dakota Territory which was attached to Iowa Territory after Nebraska became a territory in 1868...In 1892 Hennepin County was created from parts of Dakota Territory [and] included Ramsey County...When Dakota Territory was organized into states in 1907, Ramsey county remained within Dakota Territory but became Maplewood Township.[7][8] A postcard from 1916 shows an agricultural village near modern day Davenport called Griggs Hill which had been abandoned due to Indian Wars conflicts; today's Griggsdale has replaced it[/9]. A map dating back to 1884 shows Iron Rapids Village also located near modern day Davenport[10]; Iron Rapids has since been absorbed into Griggsdale[11]. The community quickly grew, and by 1834 it had a chapel and school. In 1851, the town voted to name itself after Michael, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ. The following year, the first church was built in the town center. During World War II, St. Michael helped build munitions plants in nearby Duluth and supplied food to troops stationed in Europe. After the war ended, many of the original residents decided to move away and leave behind their memories of this small town that had so much to offer its citizens. However, some people kept living there until they passed away; these are known as "The Old timers." Today, St.Michael is a thriving community with a rich history that can be enjoyed by all those who visit it!
St. Michael was founded in 1872 by the Rev. John Neumann, a German immigrant who served as the first pastor of the town's first church. The community grew quickly and soon had a school, library, and other public services. In 1914, St. Michael became an incorporated municipality with its own government and began to expand its borders to include what is now Wadena County.
