Worthington is a small town in the Minnesota Valley located about 25 miles east of Minneapolis. The population was 1,564 at the 2000 census. The community is named for General Nathaniel Worthington who fought in the American Revolution and then served as a justice of the peace in Dakota County. The settlement began as a post office called Worthington,MN on April 12, 1851. It was renamed Worthington after John Worthington, an early settler and one of the first men to enjoy water rights from the Bad River valley. The town grew rapidly due to its location and access to railroad transportation which made it an attractive place to live, work and raise families. In 1912, the city of Bloomington was incorporated into Worthington and much of its commercial district became defunct. However, much of what remained within the boundaries of today's town retains its rural character with rolling hills and numerous farmssteads. Today, Worthington continues to be a vibrant community with active businesses including two banks (First National Bank & Trust Company and Guaranty Savings Bank), two churches (First Presbyterian Church & Methodist Episcopal Church), three schools (Worthington Jr./Sr High School; Moorhead-based Hennepin County Comprehensive School District #1; Central Lakeshore Intermediate/Senior high school), two grocery stores (Target & Kroger) as well as several hundred residential units including many homes built between 1950-1980 by local builders known locally as "theADDies". The popularity of golf has helped contribute to recent growth in business around the golf course at nearby Callaway Golf Course while also making use of some donated land for additional development such as new shopping malls adjacent to Interstate 94BUSINESS PARKING LOT GARAGE SITE

However, the town's fortunes declined after World War II as production of wood decreased and competition from other towns increased. In the 1960s, Worthington experienced a renaissance as an educational and cultural center. today, the town is home to a variety of businesses and attractions, including a municipal library, arts venue, museum, high school, primary school, farmstead restaurant/bar/grill operations, traditional livestock ranching operation (including Angus cattle), four-season golf course operated by Prestwick Golf ClubWestchester County Regional Park District (which includes part membership in Southeastern Minnesota Master Plan Committee), six-hole golf course operated by Corinthia Country ClubEastman Municipal water system., two baseball diamonds (one located on Main Street near the downtown core; one located on Griggs Road off of highway exit number 12), local ice cream parlor,. The first residents of what is now Worthington were those who came overland from Canada in 1854 when Captain John Worthington built his log cabin on land he purchased east of present day Moorhead. At that time there was no road or railroads reaching this area so goods had to be transported long distances by horse or wagon. The first post office was established at Wordingen in 1856 but it only served parts of what is now Worthington Township. It wasn't until 1870 that Wordingen became incorporated into present day Worthington Township which included all of present day Moorhead Township as well as most of what is now Blue Earth County except for some small parcels northeast of Blue Earth Lake
In 1889, Worthington was incorporated as a town. In 1912, it became a city.
