Brookhaven is a city in the U.S. state of Mississippi, located on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 21,903 at the 2010 census. It is part of Jackson County. Brookhaven was founded by General John Brooks in 1825 as a small community on a shoal of bargeable muckrakers called "The Bogue". The first white person to set foot in Brookhaven was James Fenton, who landed there in 1826 when he and his brother were sailing from New Orleans to Meridian on the USS Constitution. Brookhaven's original name may have been derived from nearby Bogue Bayou (now known as Red Bayou). In 1827, General John Brooks sent out a detachment of soldiers to establish trade with Native Americans living near the bayou. They discovered that these people had named their watercourse "The Bogue" after one of their leaders, Boone (a man also known as Big Bone), who had earlier aided them during their war against Spanish forces. When they asked the local Indian chiefs what this naming distinction meant, they replied that it signified "the entrance into our territory where no one has ever come before." On July 10, 1830, General John Brooks renamed this creek "Brookhaven" after his new town site - which he had just established about 12 miles (19 km) south of present-day Brookhaven on State Road 153A. In 1840 Census records show that there were only 10 residents living in Brookhaven; however by 1850 its population had risen to around 100 people due to arrivals from Mobile and other parts of Alabama and Mississippi during the American Civil War era. A sawmill built in 1861 by Jno Epps generated muchneeded revenue for Brookhaven during its early years while also contributing significantly to its growth potential; however within 5 years production ceased because lumber became increasingly difficult to find suitable land for mills in postwar times due to increased competition from synthetic materials such as plastics and rubber products developed along America's eastern seaboardDuring World War II many civilian employees worked at various munitions plants located throughout Northeast Mississippi including: V-2 rockets being manufactured at Beecham's plant on Hwy 494 just outside present day Starkville; mustard gas production taking place at Bryant & Stratton's plant east side of town off US army road 9 near modern day Greenville; VIII Bomber Command RAF Station Baldock making use of Eagle airfield west side Of town across US highway 80 From 1940 through 1945 many workers were employed at two military hospitals: Fort Canby Hospital – north side OF town off US Highway 80 just inside present-day Starkville; and Camp Shelby Hospital – south side OFtown off I-10 just inside present day Clarksdale

Brookhaven was founded in 1836 by John C. Brook and his family. The community was located on the edge of a swamp, so Brookhaven relied on hunting and fishing to generate income. In 1840, the town got its first school when Mr. Brook donated land to build one. In 1857, the United States Congress passed the Organic Act which banned slavery in any form in America. This made Brookhaven an abolitionist community and it soon became known as "the birthplace of black Americanism." Brookhaven's economy changed after the Civil War when Reconstruction began in America. Black Americans started working in white households and businesses throughout Mississippi for the first time since slavery had been abolished. After Reconstruction, many African Americans migrated to Mississippi from other states such as Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina and Washington D.C.. Some of these migrants brought their own slaves with them while others purchased slaves from their owners before moving to Gulfport or Jacksonville where they were worked during much of their stay in America.
