Canton, Mississippi is an unincorporated community in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico between Biloxi and Corinth. The first white settlers in Canton were mechanics who bought land from the Choctaw Nation in 1814. By 1825, they had built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the river. They named their settlement after a small town in England that they had visited while on vacation. One of the early residents was Elijah Hicks, one of the founders of Biloxi and later its mayor. In 1830, Isaac Norris bought some additional land from the Choctaw Nation and Settled there with his family also including two children by his first wife Rachel Norris (née Maynard). The new settlers put up a log cabin which still stands today as part of . In 1834 he married Miss Fannie Tilton who came to live with him and their two children soon after her arrival. When Andrew Jackson became president in 1828, he appointed Cornelius Vanderbilt to be his agent for Indian Affairs in Mississippi; Vanderbilt recommended that Canton be given to him as an exception because it was "a point where no branch of commerce could exist without intercourse." When Jackson took office again in 1830–31, he discovered that most people living near Canton were farmers or fishermen rather than traders or capitalists like himself; therefore he ordered all trading posts within three miles (5 km) of Canton closed down until such time as more men could be recruited to establish businesses there instead of farming or fishing fleets. This order caused great resentment among many people living near Canton who felt they would have been better off if their communities had not been closed down at all; however this did nothing to improve business conditions there so trade continued despite Jackson's orders. By 1840 only about 20 families lived in what is now present-day Canton but by 1850 there were over 150 families residing hereabouts due largely to drainage projects undertaken during Jackson's second term as president which improved water transportation along the coastlines for goods moving inland from New Orleans and Mobile Bayou through Clarksdale and Meridian into Illinois and Kentucky across Tennessee and Alabama finally into Union territory northwest of Chattanooga. During these years free black citizens also began arriving in large numbers beginning around 1840s seeking opportunities away from slavery while others may have come simply for economic reasons such as finding cheaper labor available on plantations outsideOf Mississippi during this time period although much social interaction took place between freed slaves/ mulattoes & whites taking advantageof religious services offered by Methodist ministers (& other Protestant denominations) solemnly conducted outdoors atop Mt Olivet Baptist Church located immediately adjacentto White Street just eastof US 61 northofthe present day intersection Of White Street & US 61A northeastofFoley’s CornerMunicipality).
