Cleveland, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,815 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County. Cleveland was founded by white men from Kentucky and Ohio in 1829 as a small community on the banks of the Pearl River. The first settler in Cleveland was James Kinsley who began to graze his cattle on land that later became part of Cleveland. A post office called Brownville was established in 1830, and soon there were two stores and a school in Brownsville. In 1831, John Dickson built a shop on what is now Main Street for selling saddles and horseshoes. In 1832, Isaac Bowman started to grow corn and raised chickens on his farm north of town. By 1835,there were four stores and twenty-six people living in Cleveland. In 1836, Andrew Carnegie bought land northeast of town from James Kinsley for $10 per acre (this area would become known as Carnegie Town). He began to build mills aroundCLEVELAND which created many jobs for local residents during the early years of Carnegie's business career. Many people attribute CLEVELAND'S FIRST BUSINESS SCHOOL TO CARNEGIE because he donated money to start it in1838 with three students under tuition free conditions (it still operates today).
