They named their new settlement after a point near Athens, Georgia where they had been fishing for catfish. In 1825, three more families arrived and decided to stay and make their home here permanently. These people called themselves the "Dunn brothers". The name Moss Point stuck and has been used ever since by everyone who has lived here or worked here - farmers, fishermen, miners, lumbermen - all of whom have contributed to making this small community one of Mississippi's most important success stories. The first school was built in 1827 by Rev. George Fenton as an academy for young ladies under his care. When it closed in 1830 due to low enrollment rates, moss point's only educational opportunity was learning how to read and write using crude tools provided by members of the community itself! From 1830-1836 there was only one store open for business which sold supplies for local farmers as well as goods brought overland from Illinois by wagonloads stuffed with hay and other items that would be needed during winter months when transportation was unreliable. 2nd Store Opened In 1839 By Wm Sappington And His Sons After A Desperate Effort To Keep Business Going While Family Members Lived Elsewhere In The Area In 1840s A Mill Was Built Nearby But Cannot Be Allowed To Close Due To unsafe Conditions So It Became A Warehouse Until 1861 When It Became An Elementary School With More than 100 Students And Still Operates Today As An annex Of Jackson Department Of Education
