The community was founded by John Day and his family in 1868 as a small farming hamlet on the banks of the Asimina River. The name "Moss Point" originated from an early settler's proclamation that called for farmers to use moss to cover their crops during winter. In 1880, John Day donated land to establish a post office and school district; Moss Point became one of three communities in Jackson County authorized to vote by General Assembly in 1892. In 1910, Moss Point's cotton gin opened its doors fulfilling an early campaign promise made by Mayor Charles Sledge. At first it produced only white cotton because black cotton was not grown on this section of the state at that time. But with the help of local businessmen and women, Moss Point soon began producing both types of cotton together until World War II when it production shifted exclusively to military uniforms and supplies under wartime conditions. During prohibition years in the 1920s and 1930s, moss-covered cars were popular among locals since they could be hidden from law enforcement while being used for transportation within town limits (a practice still common today). Today there are few if any remnants of Prohibition-era life remaining in town except for some nostalgic stores selling items related to that era such as Missouri Valley beer or fake antiques from before prohibition ended
