Ocean Springs is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 7,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Ocean Springs were traders and explorers from the French colony of Louisbourg on Grand Isle (Isle de la Garde) in 1763. They named it "Océan" because of its deep water port on the Gulf of Mexico. In 1802, Colonel James K. Polk built a house here as his summer home while he served as military governor of Louisiana. He brought with him American settlers who founded Ocean Springs in 1803 as an agricultural community on a peninsula between Bayou Teche and Bayou St John Rivers that juts out into the Gulf of Mexico about 12 miles (19 km). The town's growth accelerated during the years following World War II when Desilu oil exploration began in nearby Anadarko County and production increased rapidly at the ExxonMobil refinery located adjacent to town limits. By 1960, Ocean Springs had reached its current size and included more than 100 businesses employing over 2,000 people including some 20% of all jobs in Hancock County. In recent decades there has been a significant focus on Atlantic hurricane season preparedness with several thousand residents voluntaryjoining local storm-response organizations such as SAFE (Satellite Advisory for Ferryboats), which provides live weather updates for about half a million people along US coastline each day;[1]and volunteers also participate regularly in coastal erosion control projects carried out by both state agencies and private citizens alike.[2][3] A key component of this response is having rapid response teams available 24/7 which can be activated under any circumstance should an emergency arise such as floods or power outages
