In 1821, Ocean Springs was founded as a small town in the Tensaw Delta region of Mississippi. It is now an incorporated city located in Marshall County, Mississippi. The original settlers were white men who began to arrive in Ocean Springs during the early 1800s to find land that had been claimed by the Creek Nation. By 1821, there were only a few hundred people living in Ocean Springs when it was founded and it did not become a major town until after the Civil War. The first settler in Ocean Springs was John Hogg, who arrived in 1819. He built a log cabin on the bank of the Oxford River and named his settlement after himself and his home state of New York. Hogg's cabin served as an interim headquarters for several years before being replaced by another log cabin about two miles away from the present-day city limits. The first post office in Ocean Springs was established on February 28, 1827. The name of the first postmaster was James Shields and he served for six months before quitting because he could not stand Heathen ceremonies held at his house every weeknight. Later that year, Isaac McCoy became the second Postmaster when he moved from Natchez to take over from Shields. McCoy continued to serve until 1840 when he resigned because of health problems related to yellow fever then prevalent in southern Mississippi at that time. In 1840, Captain Jno Ransom arrived with some troops from Mobile Bayou Occupying Company during General Andrew Jackson's invasion of Alabama and Tennessee; he soon realized that Ocean Springs would be an ideal spot for military barracks since it had no real defenses other than its natural resources which made it vulnerable to attack without enemy forces nearby. He offered land to Ransom on which Ransom built what is now known as Fort Riley blockhouse or simply called "Reeves Blockhouse" today due to its location within downtown Oceansprings boundaries today (see map below). Commodore John Smeaton also purchased some land adjacent to Fort Riley blockhouse subsequentlly making Oceansprings into a municipally-owned entity separate from Mobile Bayou Territory under Territorial Laws effective January 1st 1861 Aided by Captains Abraham Forney & Wm Moore these changes effectively ended Indian hostilities near Oceanspring between whites & Choctaws however they did not effect trade or commerce between blacks & whites anymore
