The business district of Starkville is nicknamed "The Supermarket". Starkville was founded on December 12th, 1837 by General James K. Polk in honor of his father-in-law Congressman John Starkweather who had died a few years earlier. The town grew rapidly and by 1840 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1851 Colonel Gossamer Lewis established a corral and ranching business in what is now downtown Starkville which soon became one of the most important cattle ranches in the South. In 1865 Union General Ulysses S. Grant made his way to Mississippi during his campaign for President and stopped at Starkville while on his way to visitGeneral Robert E Lee at Richmond Virginia; he stayed there three nights before continuing on to Memphis Tennessee where he delivered an address before Confederate forces loyal to Jefferson Davis were disbanded. On November 3rd, 1875, the first gasoline powered locomotive ever built in America arrived in Starkville from Detroit Michigan via Mobile Alabama making it possible for citizens to get their news about life back home quickly! That same year also saw the opening of First National Bank which still stands today as one of the largest banks west of Arkansas! In 1824, John Hogg settled at what is now Center Street and built a log cabin where he later sold land for $2 per acre to other settlers. By 1830, there were two stores in Starkville - one run by Elisha Bogue and another by Isaac Sells - and four blacksmiths who worked on farm equipment. In 1832, Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States and soon after appointed justice of the peace for Jackson County. He wanted to start anvil production in Starkville so ordered Joseph Beattie to get anvils from Montreal but Beattie could not find any because English shipping had stopped bringing goods overland to America during that time period. So Jackson sent his brother RobertJackson to Montreal with orders to get anvils from there instead However when Robert arrived back atJackson's house he found that all his supplies had been taken away by General Andrew Johnson while he was gone so Robert went into hiding until he could come back with more supplies some time later. To this day, no one knows why or how General Johnson got those supplies though it's rumored they may have been smuggled through Polk County into Jackson County along US- Routes 65/9 Alternate etc.. When Andrew died childless in 1835, his widow Tryon took over management of their store and started selling subscriptions to "The Mississippian" newspaper which became her personal paper source for news about county politics and events around town although she continued publishing it alone until her death in 1862 aged 70 years old (Tryon died suddenly after childbirth). In 1840 John Randolph bought a parcel of land north of Center Street from Tryon for $1 per acre ($6300 current value) making Starkville its present location including most parts east of Center Street today dating backto that year when Randolph began farming there himself across three acres (current size: .96 hectares).
