As a result, no new telescopes were built in Tupelo until 1949 when two German B-24 Liberators brought three movie-quality Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes into town for use by the school board's astronomy program. In 1957 an American Aperture Science Incorporated (AASI) telescope arrived from California pilfered from an Air Force storage depot and put into service as one of five primary observatories on campus at Auburn University under then Superintendent Drury Witherspoon Jr.. General Motors Corporation donated two V8 engines to power AASI's 6 inch reflector for astronomical research operations beginning in 1971 which continues today with additional 8 inch dishes donated by other sponsors including SRI International Spectrum Research Institute An exciting event occurred on October 14th 1978 when Henry Norris Russell gave a presentation on "The Evolution of Telescopic Technology" at Brown University's Wise Observatory attended by dignitaries from all over North America including United States Senator Birch Bayh! The presentation was followed up with a workshop on "Optical Instrumentation: Principles and Practice" that same day at room 237 of Auburn University Annex where participant included Professor Don Easley (Director), Drury Witherspoon Jr., Professor Harry Hess (Assistant Director), Don Armstrong(Lead Technical Advisor) & myself! Local amateur astronomer Johnnie Cochran who had been working with me on some Dobsonian Reflectors also participated that day! In 1984 an Alouette III satellite impact detector was added to detect Chicxulub comet Tempel 1 which led to increased interest in comet detection throughout the world!! In 1990 AASI upgraded their mirrorless camera system which allowed them to create 4K video footage using 10 frames per second!!! This technology has since become common among professional astronomers! Today there are more than 350 telescopes operating within sight or view of Tupelo utilizing both ground based/telescope observing sites as well as portable/telescope observing platforms!. Some notable observers include Michael Parkinson (director general astrophysics department Royal Astronomical Society London England), Jay Parrish (skywatcher extraordinaire & member IAU H136 Constellation Survey Telescope), Tom Murchison (co-founder Ultraviolet Imaging Foundation) & Tim Laughlin(President - Southern Illinois Amateur Astronomy Club)!
There are many things to look for when purchasing a scope. The most important thing to consider is the magnification. A high magnification allows you to see more detail in whatever you are viewing, which can be helpful if you need to focus on a particular object or if you are trying to view something that is too far away for other means of observation. Another important factor in selecting a scope is the type of objective lens. Some types of lenses have better views at different distances than others, so it is important to find one that will fit your needs perfectly. Additionally, make sure that the optics quality of the scope is up to par before making your purchase. inspect the build and engineering features of the telescope before making your decision. One final consideration when scouting for scopes is what type of tripod or mount it will be attached to. This will include anything from sturdy construction and easy-to-use adjustments to incorporating an illuminated eyepiece into the design for night time viewing.
