The Ballwin Arsenal, founded in 1836 by General James Fenton and Major George S. Patton, was the first ammunition plant in the United States. The site was on the eastern edge of town and operated until 1906. The arsenal produced both shot and shell casings for cannons, mortars, rifles, pistols, shotguns and rifle grenades. In addition to munitions production, Ballwin also manufactured clothing for soldiers during the American Civil War. Ammunition production at Ballwin stopped after World War I but continued until 1947 when it was merged into Eckhart Corporation. Today Eckhart Corporation produces sporting ammo as well as artillery rounds for military use.

The last letter sent from Ballwin was received on June 15, 1903. The city of Ballwin was incorporated as a city on November 3, 1965; it replaced an earlier incarnation known as "New London". New London had been established as a town on May 12, 1865 by order of Governor John Harlan and Samuel Tilton Randolph; it was renamed for General George Armstrong Custer who died during the American Civil War at Battle Of Gettysburg near modern day Uniontown (now Little Rock). The village of Northold also consolidated with Ballwin on November 3rd 1965 after failing to gain incorporation within two years as required by state law. Northold had been established as a rural community east of downtown BallWIN upon consolidation with ballwin; however due to population growth within ballWIN over the years they were forced to incorporate back into their larger neighbor no later than 1971
