Ballwin is a small town in Cass County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The Ballwin Micropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 3,846. Ballwin is located on the eastern edge of the State of Missouri and borders St. Louis to the south and east, Independence to the north, and most of Webster County to the west. The first settler in what would become Ballwin was James Logan in 1819. He named his plat after William Ballard who had founded Belleville in 1812. In 1830, George Hines platted what would become Ballwin from land that he and his brother had purchased from David Dixon. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the Platte River and access to water resources. In 1836, Pierre Fenton bought 100 acres (40 ha) near present-day Ballwin for $35 per acre (2 ha). By 1840, Fenton's farm included two stores, five schools, a church and four homes. When Union General John Jicks entered Cass County during the American Civil War as part of an effort to make way for Confederate General Robert Ealey during their war efforts by taking control of all sections of Missouri not controlled by Union forces,[1] local residents refused to give up their lands so Jicks could build roads or other infrastructure within their communities such as storehouses.[2] As a result, much of what is nowBallwin was undeveloped until after World War II when it became home to many soldiers who built new homes or returned back home following conflicts abroad such as World War II Europe[3][4]. In 1892,[5] A&P grocery store opened in what is now downtown BallWIN which helped spur economic development around this time period; however it closed in 1990 due to declining sales rates throughout central Missouri.[6][7][8][9] However local businesses have continuedto thrive ever since with several restaurants existing today including Blue Ribbon BBQ & Brews[10], Hooters[11],and Jimmy John's Pizza[12]. Today there are several shopping centers surrounding downtown BALLWIN that offer variety types of retail experiences such as artsy boutiques,[13]: one containing an art gallery/gallery store called "The Current", which opened in late 2017: [14]: another mall located just outside downtown BALLWIN called "Town Square" which includes anchor stores Macy's(in 2015), Sears(in 2018), JCPenney(in 2019)[15]: as well as smaller independents like Lululemon Athletica; Studio 28 Gallery; Half Price Books; Antique Mall Outlet; Jewelry Store District - features over 50 shops selling jewelry from beads through diamond engagement rings through turquoise necklaces!
