The community is named after the blue water stream that flows through it. The first settler in Blue Springs was James Waddell who arrived around 1837. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the Blue Spring River. In 1840, John Fenton moved to Blue Springs from New York and started a cotton gin and textile mill here. By 1851, there were 4 families living in Blue Springs and its sister community, West Plains, with 160 people working at the mills. In 1865, George Hargrave established a post office in Blue Springs which he called "Hargrave's Landing". The landing became an important stop on the Underground Railroad for fugitive slaves escaping to freedom during the American Civil War. In 1867-68, Jno Cramer built a sawmill that produced lumber for local homes and businesses until it burned down in 1871. From then on until 1916 when it was replaced by a more modern Millstream machinery plant, the old mill continued to be used as an agricultural production center supplying goods to nearby farms while also providing employment for many locals including Maybelle Carpenter who operated her own store from her home upriver from where she gathered eggs for breakfast each morning before selling them to customers across town at Milkman's grocery store next door; nora Poe who made quilts out of blue jeans; Harry Siskel who ran his bakery out of his home between doors #4 & 5 along Main Street; Lester Morse whose grocery sold apples by weight or by package which he would place into baskets made from large leaves that he set upon his porch shelves overlooking downtown where residents could buy their fruit fresh off the farm or pick it up at any time during daylight or nighttime; Mrs.[email protected] (later Mrs.) Foley opened her schoolhouse near intersection of 2nd Avenue & Main Street in 1870 under direction of Rev[email protected] (later Rev.) Leland Chapin which served grades K-12 until 1913 when instruction shifted to West Plains High School which still operates today as one of only two high schools remaining open west of St Louis City limits
The town of Blue Springs was founded in 1873 by James A. Goodloe and others. The original settlers were farmers who built their homes around a small creek that ran through the town. By 1875, the population had grown to about 30 people. In 1886, Blue Springs became a municipality and was renamed after nearby Blue River.
