Bridgeton, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. It lies just east of the Ozark Mountains and is bordered to the north by Bellefontaine and to the south by Bryant. According to the United States Census Bureau, Bridgeton has a total area of , all of it land. The first people in what is now Bridgeton were Native Americans who hunted deer and other game on high ground near present-day Springdale. They built their first village about 1810 on an bluff overlooking a small stream that empties into the Osage River. A post office was opened in 1814; it was discontinued in 1837 because there were no customers for its mail. The first settler in what became Bridgeton was Nicholas Huyck from Ohio who arrived around 1830. He named his place "Bridgeton." In 1836 Huyck married Catharine (Katherine) Smith from Bellefontaine and they moved to what is now Bryant where he ran a store and blacksmith shop until 1840 when he erected a house on current-day Main Street. In 1845 Huyck sold his interest in Bryant's store to John Ewing who renamed it "Ewing's Store." In 1850 Ewing purchased additional land adjacent to his store which formed the nucleus of what is now Bridgeton Village today. By this time many loggers had started arriving from Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois and other states looking for coal seams under the mountains near Springfield so Ewing decided to build a colliery here as well – also called "Ewings Colliery" – which eventually produced over 20 million tons of coal for American consumption between 1860 and 1925! In 1865 Union General Edwin Stanton directed General William Tecumseh Sherman to march through St Francois County searching for any Confederate troops remaining therein after their successful fall at Vicksburg. When Sherman reached Bellefontaine on July 25th there were only few people living theredue to food shortages caused by war efforts elsewhere including bread riots throughout America beginning two weeks earlier! On October 4th General Sherman ordered Colonel George Armstrong Custer’s 6th Cavalry Regiment (6th U S Infantry) fresh off its winter quarters at Great Meadows outside Jackson Heights NY across State line east of Memphis MO search for any Rebels still living within ½ mile radius of reported Rebel encampment known as Grit Hill! After reaching Grit Hill only 1 regiment found any rebels still living inside limits but they deemed them too dangerous so prominent citizens such as Judge James Shields took them into custody without firing a shot! That event ushered in one of history’s most famous battle(s) ever fought with more casualties than either side with Maury Butler successfully claiming several Medals Of Honor during this bloodbath including 3 Purple Hearts recipient Brigadier General Joseph Hooker himself)! Little did these brave men know that within days after capturing Grit Hill 2 more regiments would arrive!! This success led some historians believing that Stanton may have been somewhat embarrassed by being forced fight such an important battle outside his home county! The town began growing rapidly due largely toetta demand for laborers during various railway construction projects throughout central Missouri associated with both The Kansas City & Omaha Railway Company (later known as The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway)GWECO (GrundyWagon Elizabethtown Coal Railroad), Hannibal & East Quincy Railroad etc., especially those related to building new railroads through remote areas such as Iuka Dam & Brush Creek Valley etc.–the region becoming known as “railroad country” or “the Ghost Country” due numerous unsolved murders/kidnappings taking place along these routes during this period? during which numerous people died including several mayors/judges/notables like Samuel Ziegfeld Sr., Fenton Moulton Dowell Jr., Willis Colt Cabotbrothers etc.? Many residents later migrated westward following World War II industry boom & expanding agricultural production especially since Bridgeton had become available for housing developments surrounding military manufacturing plants like Rock Island Arsenal Ammunition Plant located just northwest of town on Red Bluff Road? Thereafter much environmental destruction took place due chieflyto livestock grazing practices resultingin extensive loss (& damage?)of timberlands Connected directly or indirectly with local water supplies!!!

By 1895, Fenton had surveyed over 4 square miles (10 km²) of land around what is now Bridgeton and had built several small buildings including a log store and two residences. In 1916, Wm Henson bought some of Fenton's land and started to plant corn for local markets. By 1930, Henson had developed about 150 acres (60 ha) of farmland around what is now Bridgeton with pens of corn, beans, peas, tobacco plants, hogsheads of oilseed rape or canola oil,, iron ore particles,, coal dust particles,, brickbats,, shells etc., making him one of the largest landowners in the community
