The town was founded in 1836 by Captain Robert McCulloch and his family. The first store in Bridgeton was established by Captain Robert McCulloch and his family on the corner of Elm and Walnut Streets. In 1837, Indian traders from Illinois brought over two hundred cannon to Bridgeton from Fort Dearborn (now Chicago) for use against the Osage Indians. The captain's son, John McCulloch, built a sawmill on the river near present-day Union Station in 1838. Captain Robert McCulloch’s wife died in 1830; he remarried to Jane Swope in 1834. Their second daughter Ridgeline married John Fenton, who operated a gristmill and post office there until 1870. After she died childless, he operated an inn until 1893 before selling it to JF Baird & Son which renamed it the Baird Hotel after him in 1897. In 1840, General Sam Houston purchased land north of town from Colonel James Ketchum for $5 per acre and began construction of what would become Houston's Springtown Residence – now within walking distance of both Bridgeton and downtown Kansas City – as well as other related infrastructure projects. In 1865 Mayor Ira Newcomer convened a meeting of Jackson County commissioners to consider annexing portions of Clay County due to lack of any other development opportunities within that county. On April 6th 1865 Confederate Major General Pemberton requested that all Union military posts be abandoned except for Bentonsville (which accepted surrender terms), so Captains McCulloch and Johnston were ordered to leave their post at Asheboro just outside Bridgeton with orders not to return until orders arrived from Richmond.

It wasn't until 1872 when another store opened up just east of present day Union Station called TheGeneral Store (). This store had been operating since about 1830.
After years of being closed down multiple times, this business reopened under new ownership in 1903 as The General Store & Saloon.
