By 1850, Bridgeton had built a courthouse, a schoolhouse, and several stores. In 1854, General George Crook arrived in Kansas Territory to supervise the Fort Scott campaign against Native Americans and decided to establish a new presence in central Missouri. He selectedBridgeton as his headquarters for this purpose; additionally, he assigned Colonel Elijah Woods to lead an expedition into central Missouri to survey potential land grants for settlement there. In 1855, General Crook issued orders authorizing the construction of a wagon road from Council Bluffs down the Arkansas River valley through central Missouri to St Louis so that goods could be transported more easily across country. This road was completed in 1861 but never used because of difficulty getting water supplies past Bentonite Clay Hills which ringed town like walls In 1870s many families moved out of rural areas into cities due to advances in railroad transportation and other opportunities available outside towns
Bridgeton, Missouri is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1857 by Scottish immigrants named John and Eliza Bridgeton. It originally consisted of only two homes and a couple of businesses. The first post office in Bridgiton opened on November 6, 1857. Bridgiton's first crop was wheat and corn, but it soon became evident that there was no market for such produce so the farmers began to grow other crops such as potatoes and tomatoes. By 1860, Bridgiton had five stores and twelve homes. In 1865, local legislator Daniel Prentice proposed that the name Beech Fork be given to the stream running through town which would eventually become I-435 (now US- 169). This proposal was approved by the board of trustees and the name Bridgiton was adopted. In 1870, Bridgiton had ten stores and twenty homes; three schools were also built that year along with a Methodist church which served as both a meeting place for citizens and an education center for children from nearby townships. In 1875, when bridgiton annexed neighboring townships of Bethany Landing and Clearbrook Heights due to lack of land available for development within its borders - these annexations resulted in what is now known as "The Neighborhood". From this time forward until annexation by Kansas City in 1907 - Bridgiton functioned as an unincorporated village governed by its own board of trustees with limited power over municipal affairs outside of housing development or public works projects authorized by their trusteeship alone In 1907, when Kansas City annexed Bridgiton into its city limits - all vestiges of unincorporated villagehood were eliminated as well as any remaining powers granted to trusteeship within municipal boundaries Today, remnants of what once werebridgiton's communal life can still be seen today within various areas including Main Street where several small businesses are still open today; East Market Street where four restaurants serve up traditional American cuisine; High School Drive where two cornerstones in town’s history – The Masonic Temple (founded in 1863) & The Presbyterian Church (built in 1902) are still standing; while elsewhere roads have been renamed following changes in corporate culture or real estate values within certain parts of KCMAs larger cityscape Bridgetton continues to thrive despite being surrounded by more populous areas throughout KCMO due largely to its lightly populated size combined with a committed community spirit characterized by volunteerism towards local causes Today many residents commute into downtown KCMO or take public transportation which provides some communities with much needed access to jobs close at hand while others maintain their individuality through their choice not to rely on large urban centers
