Bridgeton, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 5,385 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Buchanan County. It is part of the Springfield-Olathe, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Bridgeton was first settled by French settlers in 1764. The community name is likely derived from "Bridget" or "Bridie" which meant "peaceful" or "calm." In 1824, Captain John Smith purchased land in what would become Bridgeton from a group of Shawnee Indians. He named his new settlement after his niece, Brigitte (or Biddy) Smith who had accompanied him on his aborted expedition to find a Northwest Passage through Canada during the early eighteenth century. In 1831, Daniel Boone discovered white timber near what would become Bridgeton and began construction on a cabin known as Gopher Station. By 1840, over 100 people lived in Bridgeton with about 30 businesses including mills and churches. A post office called Bridgiton was established in 1842, but no further development occurred until 1865 when Drury & Company built an blast furnace here to make aluminum cans for their trade with Europe. This production continued until 1978 when it was closed due to environmental concerns caused by lead mining operations nearby. The present day structure of Bridgeton emerged around this time as several homes were rebuilt using local stone and brick vecchias (a type of Italianate architecture). Most notably are two large gabled buildings southwest of Main Street which remain largely unchanged since they were constructed c1890-1892 by Hargrave Bros., architects from St Louis who designed many prominent Missouri towns including Independence and Cape Girardeau . These two structures are significant not only because they are locally significant examples of 19th century Greek Revival architecture but also because their form provides evidence that brick building practices changed little between the late 1800s and early 1900s across much of Illinois/Indiana/Iowa/Minnesota etc.. A number of stores opened up during this period including Jughead's store on Main Street where grocery items such as bread, milk, eggs, butter and flour were sold; Assemblies Hardware store which served both residents and visitors; The general store on West Third Street; Red Brick Baptist Church; First Methodist Episcopal Church; Price Brothers coal mine (now defunct); The Brady Hotel (1911), now known as Lakeshore Motel: all these stores helped to create what today constitutes one important block south of downtownBrandywine Drive between Fourth and Fifth streets bordered by Seventh Avenue eastward.. After World War II various factories closed down or moved out while other businesses took root such as Phelps Dodge plant north off I-44 next door to Lakefront Casino where cars were made before being exported back into America; KFC restaurant across I-44 called Crystal Caverns after its owner Viva Americana Foods Inc.; Sears department store moved into its current location on Broadway just west side I-44 opposite WalmartDSW - this makes Bridgeton one of few cities in America without an anchor retail tenant within blocks limits .. This growing commercial nucleus developed another key feature common among many small towns throughout Michigan/Wisconsin etc.: social clubs which provided cultural programming together with games room upstairs for dances sometimes held outdoors while ladies would set up tables inside for dinner..

In 2007, Bridgeton became home to Missouri's first ethanol plant which allowed for new economic opportunities in the town center while creating jobs for locals. The plant closed in 2012 but reopened as an energy company later that year making it one of only two communities within St. Louis to have such an activity since 2005 Bridgeton has experienced various changes over its history including growth in industry (manufacturing being dominant before 2006) as well as loss of population due to moving away or retirement leaving few residents to support businesses on main street during busy seasons such as Christmas or Easter . Recently however some businesses have started up again and there are plans for further development adding another thousand residents by 2027 if all goes according to plan

Bridgeton, Missouri was founded on July 12, 1800 by the merger of two settlements in what is now St. Francois County, Missouri - Big Bend and Braxton. The town became a post office in 1821 and a city on March 14, 1907.
