Bridgeton was a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States for many years. It was located on the east side of the river and bordered by Interstate 55 to the north and east, Bridgeton-East St. Louis Road to the south, and Riverview Drive to the west. The population was 5,574 at the 2000 census. The first settler in what is nowBridgeton was Nicholas Rowe in 1824. He built a cabin on what is now East St. Louis Road. In 1830, he erected a log courthouse which still stands today as part of town hall square downtown Bridgeton. In 1831, John Hargrave moved from Illinois to become a farmer in this area and he built a home on what is now Riverview Drive near where present day Park Avenue meets I-55). He also raised hogs and other livestock hereabouts until 1840 when his farm passed into hands of Hiram Butler who then donated it to the Presbyterian church which built Saint Andrews Church on it in 1845 (now known as First Baptist Church).. In 1850 local resident Joshua Chamberlain started an tannery hereabouts with some early crude tools before moving it acrossriver to its current location adjacent to Interstate 55 about two miles east of downtown Bridgeton In 1861 local resident James Winkleman began producing coal ats his mill northeast of town along Rte 54.. In 1870 localresident George Myer opened up a dry goods store next door to Armory House on Main Street that became one of Missouri's most important commercial enterprises during the Gilded Age .. By 1880 there were over 50 businesses operating within walking distance of downtown including several banks and insurance companies.. During World War II approximately 1,000 patriotic American soldiers enlisted in Bridgeton's military service with their families while working at various munitions plants throughout central Missouri .. After hostilities ended in 1945 most businesses closed but one bank continued business as First National Bank until 1970 when merger between two other banks led by David Bogan created National Bank & Trust Company which merged with US Bancorp Incorporated becoming NBT Corporation . Finally by 1990 all but one business had either closed or exitedthe market due largelyto automation technology . Today only three remaining buildings remain from original community - main square building (built 1901), shotgun house (1892), and blacksmith shop/pub (1907).
