The history of Carthage begins with the founding of the city by Captain John Mason in 1836 as a place where he could store goods before traveling to St. Louis to sell them. After two years, however, Captains John Aiken and William Morrow purchased land around the corner from Captain Mason and began building what would become known as Fort Dixon on July 10, 1840. The fort served as a military post until it was destroyed by fire on October 15, 1841 while under siege by Confederate forces led by Brigadier General Robert Ewing Jackson Sr.. In 1861, after Missouri seceded from the United States following Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration as President of America, Confederate General Stephen Taney moved his army into central Missouri to threaten Union Posts at Harper’s Ferry and other locations across the state. On April 12th 1865 at approximately 4 p.m., Confederate General Robert Ewing Jackson Jr., leading an army numbering more than 150 thousand men attacked Fort Dixon without warning or provocation from any member within either side; this attack resulted in one death for each Confederate soldier engaged therein.] On November 5th 1865 almost all civilian buildings including houses were burned down during an effort to suppress public sympathy for northern troops besieging Richmond Virginia after their surrender.] In 1880 when James Kenedy bought 2/3 interest in Republic Brewing Company he renamed it "The Hannibal Brewery" which still stands today]

In 1898 Massacres occurred in Carthage that left 300-400 citizens dead or wounded; this event is still regarded as one of the worst terrorist attacks in US history
