Chesterfield is located 28 miles (45 km) east of Saint Louis and 42 miles (57 km) north of Kansas City. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first post office in Chesterfield was established on November 3, 1824, by Hiram Purdy. The present building was built in 1865 and serves as the town hall today. One of the early pioneers in Chesterfield was Isaac Sibley who arrived there with his family from Indiana in 1821. He purchased a plot of land east of present-day Chesterfield from David Griffiths for $225 dollars cash and four horse teams worth $2 each. Sibley began to build an cabin on this property which he named "Sibley's Grove". In 1830 he married Rachelle Parish and their home became known as "Rachelle's House" until she died in 1887. In 1840, John Denton came to Chesterfield from Arkansas with his family and started a grocery store on Main Street which still stands today as Denton's Grocery Store Incorporated (DSG). On October 15th that year, General James Ketchum met Denton and two other men near what is now downtown Wichita Hills while travelling through Buchanan County on his way to survey land grants for future settlers near Pleasant Hill Lake where he would later develop into Kansas City proper. This meeting marked the beginning of what would become one of America’s most important agricultural towns - Ketchum had seen how well businesses were doing back home when he ran across them operating out of tents on the banks of riverboatsman’s landing at Cairo Landing opposite Lower Town – so when he heard about an abandoned farmstead just outside Chesterfield offering fertile country lying “opposite some high hills... [he] determined to visit it…[and] found it exactly what he had been looking for!” On July 5th, 1850 Sarah Joice Hubbell married Winthrop Phelps at her parent’s house northeast corner Main Street & High Street – henceforth known as Phelps & Hubbell Place after Mrs. Phelps’ death several years later from ovarian cancer at age 46 years old; Winthrop Hubbell became one half owner with his wife until her death ten years later also from ovarian cancer caused by asbestos exposure during construction work done on their home adjacent to Republic National Bank Headquarters across High Street – they are buried together under shade trees next door to original bank building now used as parking lot for business purposes only). At this time all three original families living here combined made up over ninety percentofthe community’s population numbering more than 4500 people including women accused or convictedof felonies suchas larceny/theft etc.; more than 90%of these residents were white haulers drawn hither by cheap lands offered hereabouts without any consideration givenTo those who daredcrossGeneral James Ketchum; however avarice soon overcame caution & before long many awaywhite farmers had come pouringinto this thriving new town thereby reversing centuries old policy whereby whitesOnly collected taxeson landedproperty whereas Negroes&maleswere requiredto pay poll taxes(purchase rights hereinto real estate) . . .
