Clayton, Missouri is a town located in the Ozarks region of southern Missouri. It was founded in 1836 by farmers who came from Illinois and Indiana. The first post office in Clayton was established in 1839. In 1860, the town had a population of just 6 people. However, it grew rapidly during the American Civil War due to the soldiers who lived and fought here. In 1865, Clayton became the capital of Missouri after Jefferson City was destroyed by Union forces. The city continued to grow until it had a population of over 100,000 by 1910. During World War II, Clayton played an important role as one of the main production centers for ammunition used by both sides in the war. The city also played host to numerous military services ceremonies and parades throughout the years.

Clayton was founded in 1837 by fur trader and explorer David Clayton and his wife Mary Nolen Clayton. The first post office in Clayton was established in 1840. It remained open until it closed in 1865 due to lack of mail service from Springfield. The first school in Clayton was built in 1847 and served grades one through four. A new school building was built for grade five in 1861 and served that level until it burned down in 1923. Clayton has been home to several industries over the years, including plastics manufacturing, paper production, and brewing beer. In 2002, Monsanto announced plans to move its operations from St Louis to Clayton after twenty years of operation there. At that time, the town's only industry was agriculture; however, this has changed over time as other businesses have moved into Clayton or have been acquired by other businesses within town limits: In 2006, rocketry manufacturer ATK announced plans to build a plant there; later that year, Global Logistics announced plans to build a shipping container factory; and finally Enbridge oil storage facilities opened up shop there in 2015/16.

Clayton was founded in 1827 by General James Wilkinson and his wife, Eliza. The town site was on a bend of the Missouri River, about three miles from its present location. Its first settler was Captain John Clayton, who built a cabin near the riverbank. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 it had a school, jail, post office, and other public buildings. In 1836, Clayton became the capital of what is now Arkansas County. In 1840, it received an addition of land east of the river to form what is now Grandview Heights neighborhood. The first courthouse in Clayton was built in 1841. By 1865, all but four of the townships had been merged into Grandview Heights Township. In that year, also, Clayton became one of thirteen counties in Kansas Territory. During World War I (1914-18), Clayton served as headquarters for the 3rd Infantry Division for three months during October 1918. Afterward it reverted to Grandview Heights Township status until May 1919 when it again became Headquarters for the 1st Infantry Division until October 1919 when it reverted back to Headquarters for the 3rd Infantry Division again until December 1919 when Headquarters changed hands once more to Fort Riley Army Post Command which then moved to Topeka before returning home on January 1 1920 where it remained until May 1924 when Fort Riley Army Post Command closed down with all troops being transferred away from Dodge City Oklahoma and grand total closing date being July 15th 1924
