Columbia, Missouri is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the population was 25,611. The city is the county seat of Columbia County and is part of the St Louis Metropolitan Area. It lies on both banks of the Missouri River, which forms its eastern border. COLUMBIA was founded by a group of Latter-day Saint pioneers who arrived in 1821 from Nauvoo, Illinois. They named their new settlement after Columbia University in London, England where they had been taught by Brigham Young and his men during their missionary journey there two years earlier. The first settler in Columbia was Captain John Cook who built a cabin on an bluff overlooking the river in 1830. A second cabin was erected by Major James Wolkers about 1836 near what is now known as Fourth Street and Broadway Avenue; it still stands today as an Historical Monument to Columbia County residents Alfred Sanger (1854-1929), Isaac Singer (1859-1937), Hiram Bingham (1867-1927) and Everett Dirksen (1920-1971). The City Council convened for the first time on November 3, 1847 and voted to adopt a charter from the State of Missouri that same day! On December 12th, 1847 when representatives from Clay County presented petitions for incorporation into Columbia County they were granted! January 5th 1850 saw Mayor John Fenton appoint George Armstrong as Constable with power to arrest anyone not registered with him within six months or face execution! The first school building used for instruction was located at 1114 E 4th Street which served students until 1870 when a new school house was constructed at 501 E 2nd Street which housed grades K through 8 until 1907 when another school house also became operational at 501 E 2nd Street serving grades 9 through 12 until Columbias public library opened its doors in 1922! In 1865 an addition to this structure - called "The Oldenes" -was built just east side of Broadway Ave between First and Second Streets – this building still stands today! In 1886 Mrs Czarnecka donated land parcels across from her home on Third Street between Eighth and Ninth Streets for development into what would become known as Park Heights which included several blocks north up Third Street along Park Heights Boulevard before turning east onto High Ridge Road leading south to Interstate 55 just south of where it meets I‑70! Mrs Czarnecka's donation also provided initial funding for Columbias present day public library system!. Park Heights Boulevard went out of business following World War II so much property changed hands that only one block remains extant down three streets west including part or all of what used to be private residences including one currently occupied by Metro Credit Union! EighthStreetand NinthStreet have since reverted back to their original street names while some other properties remain open space!! Today Columbias largest shopping center - anchored by Sears – anchors one cornerofHigh RidgeRoadandParkHillsBoulevardjust southeastofI‑70anda well awayfrommost populated areas!!! As mentioned earlier Columbia began life as a small town with only ten people living there according to officials at that time; however over time more settlers arrived bringing with them their own churches, schools, businesses etcetera making town growth inevitable even though many homes were never completed due influxes such as those aforementioned church/schools/businesses mentioned previously… eventually becoming large enough that it incorporated under its own name in 1874!!! In 1905 local banker & Trustee Jens Sorenson helped found Enterprise Loan & Trust Company providing banking services within town limits until 1978 when he sold his interest!! After 140+ years having thrived largely thanks largely to its citizens thru hard work & dedication + lots o' family fun ensuing good times ensued Enterprise closed shop unexpectedly abruptly ending all hopes o' ever seeing it again Biglaissee will continue tumbling neater than ever btw

Columbia, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks Mountains of eastern Missouri. The population was 1,709 at the 2010 census. Columbia is one of twelve towns in Pulaski County and the county seat. It lies on the Mississippi River downstream from St. Louis, Mo., and has a population density of only 17 people per square mile (6/km²). The first settlers in what is now Columbia were three families who arrived on horseback from Illinois in 1836. They named their new community after the city of New York City that they had been visiting during their trip westward. The first store was built in 1840 by James McMurtry, a Reeve with the First Baptist Church in St. Louis. In 1845, Major George Armstrong Custer became General Ulysses S. Grant's aide-de-camp and decided to move his headquarters to Columbia so he could be closer to his command center during the American Civil War. Custer's Headquarters House still stands today as part of Ulysses S. Grant Park in downtown Columbia. In 1862, Confederate General Robert Ewell called for all able-bodied men between 17 and 50 years old to come north to fight for him against Union General Ambrose Burnside at Eastern Prussia Creek near present day Bryantville, MO.. Many young men from Clark County did not have enough money or food to leave home so they volunteered instead to work on farms or supply lines running south along Iuka Road into Corinthsville before finally reaching Union lines at Missionary Ridge just east of town on April 9th 1865 becoming known as "The Lost Battalion". On July 3rd 1863 when Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union forces under Ulysses S Grant at Chickamauga Field outside Athens, GA many soldiers deserted without honorable discharge because they did not have horses available to them so they walked back into battle rather than fight with animals carrying their dead and wounded comrades over open ground where artillery would have easily destroyed them if noticed by Union troops nearby like most other battlefield withdrawals that season...Some historians believe that this event may be responsible for Lincoln being impeached two months later

After the war, Columbia regained some of its former prominence as a commercial center; however, its economy has since been struggling due to changing demographics and technological advancements.
