With large numbers employed in manufacturing plants across the state, commercial activity also grew during this time period which has continued into present day with several small businesses operating withintown limits as well as several large companies headquartered within easy driving distance (such as Monsanto). The current incarnation of Columbia began to take shape after incorporation by vote on November 9th 1923 when voters approved plans for what would become one of America's most important shopping malls downtown - The Mall atrium which now spans over three blocks between First Avenue South & Second Street South inside City Hall complex - anchored by Sears Department Store (now Macy's) on one side and Home Depot on another with additional anchor stores such as JCPenney/AEO AG & Co., Kroger Supermarkets/Grocery Outlet Centers/Bargain Basement Stores,, Dick’s Sporting Goods Incorporated/, LED Lighting Corporation/, FedEx Ground Distribution Center/, autoparts warehouse club/, Winn-Dixie Stores Incorporated/. Today much like its predecessors it is known for its wide variety of retail brands including Macy's (the original anchor), Sears Holdings Corp.", KFC / Pizza Hut International/, JC Penney Co., Applebee's Restaurants LLP/Pasadena restaurant chain/, Bloomingdale's department store LLP/CVS Pharmacy LLP/+., Federated Department Stores (), Meijer Drugs LLC(), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (), Dollar General Corporation ()
