Columbia is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. The name Columbia is derived from the Cherokee word "konoma", meaning "place of habitation." The first settler in Columbia was John Pemberton in 1836. He and his brother James founded the town on the east side of the Missouri River. They named it after their home village ofColumbus, Ohio. As early as 1839, there were five miles (8 km) of wagon trails leading to and from Columbia by way of natural highways that crossed the bottom of the Missouri River near present-day Springfield. In 1840, General William Halleck built a fortification called Fort Halleck on what is now Park Hill in order to protect Commerce City on the west bank of the river from Native American attacks. However, within a few years Fort Halleck had been abandoned and most of its cannons removed for use against Indians at nearby Kansas City. A new forte was established at Columbia in 1845 by General David Hunter under orders from President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War I as part of Operation Crossroads to prevent German submarines from attacking Ulysses S. Grant's supply convoy sailing downriver through central America carrying food and munitions essential to our war effort. The fortifications were destroyed by fire during battle on July 17, 1945; however some remnants still stand today including Market Street Gate which overlooks downtown Columbia and can be seen from Interstate 45 just east of Highway 169 near Springdale Airport
Columbia, Missouri was founded in 1836 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It became a slave state in 1865. The City of Columbia was founded in 1904.
