Columbia, Missouri is an incorporated town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,353 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The town was settled by Germans in 1837 and named for Lord Columbia of Scotland who had destroyed a French fort there that year. In 1841, it became a county seat under the name "Columbia". The first post office opened in 1845 and remained in operation until 1907. In 1865, the towns of Independence and Parkville were merged into Columbia to form a new city with a population of 8,000. On July 16, 1870 – less than two months after the merger – Columbia was designated as the capital of Missouri by Governor John Fenton Nebeker on the recommendation of General James Seddon; Columbia would serve as both state capital during Reconstruction (1870-1877) and as the location for most federal offices until Springfield replaced it in 1889. As part of Interstate 64 construction between 1960 and 1966, routes 95 and I-670 were routed through Columbia along what was then called US 165 north from Topeka to Rolla; this created traffic congestion on Main Street which resulted in its designation as an expressway instead of a street connector like other U.S.-highway corridors at that time. A bypass project completed in 1984 eliminated this bottleneck while also widening Main Street to four lanes widthwise; concurrent with these measures, several stores were razed to make way for new development southward on Main Street including Piggly WigglyBurger King which has since been relocated to Kansas City proper but continues to occupy space adjacent to Columbias former shopping center site (now known as Fred Meyer). A new primary school opened within Columbias limits on October 15th 2009 just east of Route 65 across from Interstate 640 / I-435s exit #2 near Wichita State University where students used their Union High School building until 2003 when that building became available for college use after Wildcat Stadium closed due to lack of student enrollment
