Crestwood is a small town in Ozarks County, Missouri, United States. The population was 996 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. Crestwood was founded in 1867 by mortgage company employees and their families as a farming community on the edge of what is now Springfield. The town name comes from a local tree, which had been cut down for wood to fuel a furnace in 1868. Crestwood grew rapidly due to its location and good access to transportation. A post office was established in 1870, and growth continued until 1907 when an experimental hydroelectric power plant was built at nearby Springdale and the town lost its status as an agricultural center. Crestwood was founded in 1836 by militia colonel John A. Crestwood and his wife, Esther. The town was named for the surrounding ridge of hills which are today known as Crestwood Heights. Crestwood grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s due to its location at the crossroads of two important wagon roads, the National Road and the Missouri Road. In 1846, Crestwood became a part of Benton County and saw rapid growth in trade and industry. By 1850, Crestwood had a population of over 100 people. In 1861, when Missouri seceded from the United States, Crestwood joined Confederate Missouri. With no government to support it, many businesses closed down after the war ended; however, some men continued to operate them until they were destroyed by arson in 1865. In 1892, Edwin Prentice began farming in what is now Crestwood on land that had been given to him by his father-in-law Daniel Boone. Prentice built a house on this land in 1903 and called it "The Old House". The current home was completed in 1969 and is one of only three remaining buildings from original crest wood settlement dating back to 1836. Today's crest wood community is located about two miles east of downtown St Louis on I-57 south near exit 133A/Rochester Rd., just west of Route 66 (exit 15), off I- 57 between exits 133A/Rochester Rd./St Louis Mo./Moses Lake Rte./Harrisonburg Va., reachable via driving south on I- 57 past route 66 entrance then turning east on Rochester Rd.(exit 133B)
