During World War II, while other neighborhoods were bombed or destroyed by Allied forces; residents of Crestwood stayed put to continue using Hennepin's Ridge for target shooting purposes! Today, Hennepin's Ridge remains an open-air rifle range located within walking distance of most homes in town! In 1984, Samuel Colt began production on their new Model 9mm pistols at their plant located on west Main Street in downtown Crestbury (now part of Park Heights). At that time there were only 10 pistols being produced per day! Over time Colt production rapidly expanded so that today there are tens of thousands of Model 9mm pistols manufactured annually at Samuel Colt plants worldwide! The town site was laid out in 1836 by General James Wilkinson and named for his brother-in-law Colonel Ebenezer Crestwood of Virginia. The first post office was established in Crestwood on January 20, 1840, by order of Governor Charles W. Linnell. Jackson County was organized on November 3, 1835, from parts of St. Francois County. As a result of the Great Famine that struck Missouri during the 1830s and 1840s, many people left to find food or other opportunities elsewhere in what were then newly acquired territories west of the Mississippi River. In 1846, when Jackson County became an open county seat as a result of Jay Cushing's successful campaign for election as Missouri Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President on November 4th, Crestwood had a population of only 10 residents; today it has a population over 1,000! In 1850 and 1851 there were several small settlements scattered around the original townsite - all which are now gone except for one (Logan). The first mill opened in Crestwood in 1852 and continued operation until 1865 when it burned down due to natural gas reserves discovered nearby (the discovery led to the nickname "GAS Town".) The second mill operated successfully until 1861 when it also caught fire due to gas leakage from an associated system that still remains active to this day! In 1865 local farmers formed a company called "The Northern Illinois Railroad" which built a branch line eastward from Crestwood into Clay Township which served as its political center until 1870 when goods started flowing back into Crestwood via this new branch line! Today you can still see some remnants of this old railroad activity including some switches located near US Highway 59 just south of town limits! merchandising companies such as Sears & Roebuck developed their businesses within crest wood during this time period too...Today you can buy most anything you could possibly need or want here including farm equipment and machinery etc., A variety store/mall has been built recently inside town limits along with several restaurants/cafés serving up great cuisine!!! Crestwood is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Rolla-Clearwater Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Crestwood were two families who arrived in 1839 from Kentucky: The Hardings and the Pritchettes. They built their cabin on a clearing near what is now US 64 and MO 65. By 1850, Crestwood had six homes and 11 residents. A post office was established in 1855, and by 1860, it had twelve residents. The first school in Crestwood was built in 1865 by Mrs. Mary Cushing to replace an earlier one that burned down. In 1870, Mrs. Cushing donated land for a new school building which became the town hall and still stands today. In 1922, the town voted to build a new high school which became crestwood High School; the old high school building was used as a garage for many years until it was torn down in 2006 to make way for redevelopment of the site into apartments and commercial space). In 1925, Crestwood voters passed a local option referendum asking if they should become one of three municipalities within St Francois County (the others being Clearwater and Joplin) if they approved changes to county government brought about by statehood proceedings; this vote created Crestwood Township (which included most of present-day Crestwood). Today there are just over 100 people living inside of Crest wood limits; outside of those boundaries there are no settlements or townships within our township boundaries other than those located within Rolla-Clearwater Micropolitan Statistical Area (RCLA).
