Creve Coeur is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,580 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The community was first settled in 1836 by men from Kentucky and Indiana who were on their way to Kansas Territory. The community name originated with one of these men, Hiram Creve Coeur, Sr., who had named a creek after himself and his father-in-law, General James K. Polk Jr.. A post office called Creve Coeur was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The Village of Creve Coeur began forming in the early 1960s when the local school board decided to consolidate all of the schools into one building and rename them "CreveCoeur Elementary." The original buildings that housed these schools are still standing today and are used as part of CreveCoeur High School which opened in 2006. On July 3rd, 1916 – just two weeks before World War I began – CreveCoeur citizens voted to become an independent city within St. Louis County by referendum; they became so effective at this that there has never been another such vote taken anywhere else within the county during its history! In 1961–1962 a new large shopping center was built on State Route 50 east of town; it remains one of town's most popular attractions today with over 150 stores inside its walls! In 1984–1985 a large water tower/pump station complex (now known as "The Gondola") was built south off US Highway 55 between US Highway 64 & US Highway 71 just outside town limits; it continues to be used today for both public functions & private purposes! In 2003–2004 an addition to the downtown core (known locally as "the Piazza")was constructed on land northeast of Main Street which now houses several restaurants & gift shops as well as an enlarged park with basketball courts (& more!)
