Farmington, Missouri is a town located in central Missouri. The population was 8,634 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Farmington Micropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Farmington can be traced back to 1854 when it was known as Horseheads Valley. In that year, James Hinton and his family purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of downtown Farmington from John Fenton for $3 per acre. Hinton named the new community after himself, Farmington being his initials. In 1870, the first post office in Farmington opened with three mailboxes and 12 residents. By 1900, there were 14 businesses in town and more than 50 people living there. By 1930, the population had reached 200 and by 1960 it had increased to 300. Today, Farmington has a population over 800 and its schools are among the best in central Missouri. The economy of Farmington is based on agriculture with some processing operations also located in the town such as farm livestock feed stores and diecasting plants used for casting products such as cars and toys. A number of smaller manufacturing establishments have been built over time including two printing presses; one operated by Joplin Press Company until 1984 and another by Smith-Mills Corporation until 2002; both closed down due to economic conditions within their industries at that time. The majority of residents are farmers who grow crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton or hay; animal husbandry includes raising pigs, cows or horses; while a small amount of manufacturing takes place including several small businesses which provide services such as construction labor or home improvement supplies. Two large shopping centers are located within walking distance of each other - One on State Route 159 just outside Ofallon and one on Eighth Street near Interstate 44 just inside Ofallon - both offering retail space along with restaurants, bars and other commercial opportunities. There is also an excellent public school system serving all inhabitants of Farmington with five high schools –including twozekiah Adams High School–and one elementary school.
