In Ferguson, Missouri, the history of gun protection goes back to at least 1892. The city was founded by a group of farmers who wanted to protect their land from squatters and developers. Ferguson, Missouri is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first reference to Ferguson comes from a deed by James Kempton in 1792 which referenced "Ferguson Plantation". The first white person to live in Ferguson was John Harden who arrived in 1819. It wasn't until 1836 that George Catlett bought land here and started clearing land for a cotton plantation which he named Catlett's Cotton Mill after himself and his son-in-law, Colonel Francis Catlett Sr.. Although the mill never actually worked, it became an important symbol of early Ferguson because it was one of the few buildings on the square that remained standing from before the townsite formed around it during the 1830sgrowth of downtown Saint Louis after being founded as a military post at what is now White Rock Springs Road and Forest Park Avenue. In 1865 Abraham Lincoln stopped by Ferguson on his way to ride with Ulysses S Grant into Springfield where he will be inaugurated as president that evening; according to one account Lincoln asked if there was anything he could do for Ferguson residents such as provisioning their homes during his stay. According to another accountlocal citizens had already sent food and other supplies ahead for him so when he arrived they brought him up close and presented him with a jar of honey from their hives outside of town ().
