Florissant, Missouri is a small town in St.Charles County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,514 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded by Nicholas Florissant in 1836 on a tract of land that he had purchased from the Osage Indians. Florissant named it after his sister Flora who had been born in nearby Topeka, Kansas to parents who were also French Canadian settlers. Florissant's store and tavern soon became one of the most important in the community and helped to drive out competition from larger stores and restaurants within town boundaries. In 1851, Florissant built a schoolhouse which served as both a local church and primary school until 1906 when it was replaced by a new building which still stands today. In 1919 Florissant established an agricultural research station known as "The Farm" adjacent to his home which continues to operate today as The University of Missouri-Kansas City Agricultural Experiment Station (MO-KAS). The facility has produced many landmark discoveries such as corn oilseed rape and maize hybrids since its creation including strains for Monsanto, Engqvist & Co., Bunge et al., Eli Lilly & Co., Dow AgroSciences Inc., Bayer AG etc.. In 1941 Florissant erected a memorial tablet at Olathe Cemetery next to Stonington Cemetery with prominent citizens ofKansas City contributing money for the project including Mayor Harry Siefrieder and industrialist George Wernick Sr.. In 1993 local resident Don Dickson designed and fabricated the granite cornerstone for this plaque which now overlooks both cemeteries.
