Fulton, Missouri is a town in the St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,824 as of the 2010 census. The town was named for John Fulton, an early settler and first mayor of Independence, Missouri. The first post office in Fulton was established on July 1, 1836. It was renamed Independence on January 6, 1851. The community grew rapidly after the completion of the Union Pacific Railroad's line from Nauvoo to Springfield in 1857. In 1861, three years after the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House, Fulton became one of thirteen towns in Union County that were ceded to Confederate General Robert E. Lee along with Jefferson City and other towns near Rolla in central Kansas Territory during his campaign for governor of Arkansas. Fulton suffered significant damage during World War I when German artillery shellings destroyed many buildings and killed dozens of residents; however it regained most its functionality by 1919 when new construction began on what is now downtown Fulton; this included a large brick schoolhouse which served as both a post office and local courthouse from 1892 until 1928).
