In 1923 Charles Aiken donated 4 acres (1 km2) of land to the town for development into an agricultural research center which would remain operational until 2002 when it reverted back to farmland.[4] During World War II many residents enlisted in service abroad; some even kept their homes while they served. Most of those who left never returned home again but did leave behind memories of good times spent around friends and family members who still live there today. One such resident is Tom Kovalczyk who died in 2006 after serving tours with both Korea and Vietnam.[5]
