In 1827, a company was formed to purchase rifles from local farmers. This company became known as the “Grandview Rifle Company”. By 1876, there were over 20 businesses in Grandview that sold firearms. These businesses included Shot Show Place, Armoury & Pistol Shop, Shotgun House and Pistolsmith Shop. At this time, handguns were not common in Grandview because they were seen as too dangerous and not worth the investment. However, starting in 1877, handguns started to become more popular and began being sold at these businesses. As gun ownership grew throughout Grandview, so did crime rates. In 1886, shooting occurred at an amusement park called Cashman's which left one man dead and two wounded. At this time,guns began becoming more important to criminals because they could be used for protection instead of just hunting animals or target practice. In 1907, Gunsmoke magazine published an article about how to shoot effectively with pistols which became a hit with handgun owners across America. This article helped increase popularity of handguns among law enforcement officers and civilians alike who now had access to these weapons for self-defense purposes. Starting in the 1970s through the 1980s gun sales decreased throughout Grandview due to increased regulation by state governments and subsequent changes in society overall which made it harder for consumers to buy firearms without government approval (Guns may only be possessed by people who are registered with a sheriff’s office).
