The initial route proposed by highway builders would have bypassed both towns completely but local activists met with success and persuaded Congress instead to build only part of Route 66 between Springfield and Carthage using land acquired from Hunt's Ranch as well as from other landowners along its route. The city of St Joseph began developing around 1939 when plans were announced for Interstate Highway 40 (I-40) to be constructed through Clay County including parts of Corinthsville and St Joseph itself; however no highway ever materialized due primarily to disagreements over how much development should be allowed within any given township while still maintaining control over traffic arteries such as US 60/I-70/St Joseph Boulevard outside those municipalities limits

In 1936 it became an independent city again following a referendum by its citizens over whether or not to incorporate as a city once again from scratch due to concerns about traffic congestion on Main Street (which would have been greatly increased by annexing adjacent towns).
