A post office called "Hazel Wood" was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1901, a group of colonists from Illinois founded what would become Hazelwood. The town's name comes from a hazelnut tree that grew on the property where the original settlers built their homes. In 1904, a dam across the White River was constructed to create water for Hazelwood residents and businesses; this created what is now known as “The Pool” area which includes much of today’s downtown core. In 1908, Hazelwood voters passed an ordinance authorizing serving alcohol for consumption by residents within limits prescribed by law without obtaining a liquor license from the government; this put Hazelwood on par with other towns within its jurisdiction that had begun selling beer or wine while still using Prohibition-era regulations
Hazelwood was founded in 1836 by John and Catharine Hazelwood. The town was named after a hazelnut tree, which John had seen while he hiked in the area. The Hazelwoods developed a small millinery business and started to build a gristmill in 1840. In 1851, they built a sawmill and power plant. The town rapidly grew and became an important center for the local agricultural industry. In the 1870s, Hazelwood began to develop into a large city with multiple businesses and residents. By the end of the century, Hazelwood had become one of the most important cities in Missouri.
