By 1907, they had built a shed on their property that allowed them to observe galaxies and other celestial objects in detail with their new set of binoculars. In 1915, Pollard's son Forrest bought the family business from his father which included the manufacture of binoculars. After Forrest died in 1951, Sons Jay & Bruce Pollard took over production until 1978 when Hawkins Optical Corporation was founded in Illinois by Jay Pollard Jr.
Hazelwood is a small town in Scott County, Missouri, United States. The population was 685 at the 2010 census. Hazelwood is located in the eastern edge of the county and is surrounded by rural areas on three sides. The area that would become Hazelwood was first settled in 1836 by settlers from Illinois. The town was founded on a farmstead donated by General James K. Polk. The town name may be due to its location near the now-demolished Missouri Central Railroad depot known as "Hazelwood". After years of growth and development, the population of Hazelwood reached 1,000 by 1890. In 1907, an electric power plant was built in Hazelwood and led to a rapid growth in the community; however, it also caused enormous pollution which negatively impacted local businesses and residents. In 1940, Hazelwood voted to secede from Scott County and formed its own government with its own mayor, school board, and jail. In 1951, when Interstate 55 crossed throughattledowns just east of town limits and cut off most access to farming land east of downtown (the original incorporation date for downtown), many farmers abandoned their homes in what became known as "The Great Drought". Hazelwood is an unincorporated community in Webster County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1 at the 2010 census. It was organized in 1867 as a result of the consolidation of two small communities, Hazelwood and Aiken. The first European to visit what is now Hazelwood was Father Louis Jarry on his trip from St. Louis to Quincy, Illinois in 1819. He named the area "Hazelwood" after a weeping willow near his home which he noted had beautiful white flowers in May. The willow's name may be derived from the Shawnee word "ha-zel-woo" meaning "honey tree." Aiken was founded by Captain John Fenton and his family on July 24, 1853, about twelve miles west of Hazelwood on State Route 12. Captain Fenton claimed land east of the Arkansas River for Missouri when he surveyed the Kansas Territory line on November 3, 1854. His grant included what is now Webster County and part of eastern Platte County today including Aiken and portions of Union and Newton counties. In 1867, as a result of the consolidation of two small communities - Hazelwood (population 5) and Aiken (population 2), both located in Webster County - both towns were placed under one government with a mayor and board of trustees responsible for all aspects of local government including education, public works, arts & crafts programs etc.. This new form of government helped make Hazelwood an increasingly vibrant community with many businesses opening up during this time period such as restaurants/bars/nightlife venues etc.. In addition to its growing economy, Hazelwood also became known for its traditional craftsman's efforts such as quilting & piecing together baskets or dolls using donated materials from residents & friends etc... There are still numerous examples around town that can be seen evidence that these craftspeople used their skills to create items such as door handles., bedposts., window frames., coffee cups., mugs., table lamps etc... Many items still remain unchanged since they were made back then with only modern technology being able to improve their quality & functions! Following World War II there were dramatic changes taking place within Webster County due to changes brought about by war effort efforts specifically within agriculture which led to increased production costs along with increased competition among farmers causing some families To leave their homes while others chose sell land they had already purchased elsewhere becoming known as 'The Great Migration'. As a result Of this change in society many people who came overland during those years did not cross into Kansas until after arriving at various points east side Missouri where they would start Farms or take other types Of jobs creating more demand for goods produced within Webster County thereby stimulating much needed economic growth! Housed primarily within neighborhoods throughout town center /high school grounds are examples exhibiting typical rural life during those years like children playing outside; women busy cooking dinner; men working inside; horses pulling wagons full ol' ole pickles while folks gathered around smoking pipes while listening to music courtesy ol' pipes played by old timers like Joe Hutcheson late night train Kept me company all last summer when I spent my weeks free en route from StL

Hazelwood became an important center for early trade and commerce, and its industries included tanning, papermaking, and cattleraising. Hazelwood's growth caused social unrest, which was often exploited by business owners. In 1854, the town passed an ordinance forbidding public drunkenness. In 1865, Hazelwood established a school system that soon became one of the largest in the state. By 1870, Hazelwood had become an important commercial center with a population of over 1,000 people. It remained an integral part of Missouri until it merged into Kansas City in 1907.
