In the early 1800s, Independence was a thriving town in Jackson County. It had a population of around 1,000 people and an Arsenal built by Captain John Smith to store firearms. The town was located on the banks of the Missouri River, about 20 miles from the then-new capital of St. Louis. The first gun target known to have been placed in Independence was erected by Colonel George Rogers Clark in 1802. This target became one of the most popular in Independence and throughout Missouri because it could be easily obtained by anyone with enough interest or skill. After Clark's death, his targets were turned over to local farmers for use as shooting fields until 1814 when Major Amos Kendall took over responsibility for these targets. Kendall continued to place new targets at various locations in Independence until his death in 1825. After Kendall's death, responsibility for target placement fell into disarray until 1829 when Captain John Ransom established himself as head shooter at the Arsenal. From then on, target placement within Independence effectively ceased due to Ransom's proficiency at this type of shooting. However, some remnants of this past activity can still be seen today - such as an old cannonball launcher that is used for training young shooters here at the Arsenal today!

Overall these developments were helping contribute towards increased prosperity for all Americans east of the Mississippi River during this time period; indeed some say[1] "the eraof railroads did more than anything else to open up eastern areas for colonization" ([02]). Meanwhile back at Independence Mound life went unchanged [03]; most likely due too Chooke’s Iron works continuing production despite everything going wrong while everyone else was moving on or leaving; also Chooke being quite richman having bought land all around town[04]. On top off all this good news came word from England about another war happening so things must have been feeling pretty good! Well not really...On July 8th1862 Union troops marched into town demanding suppliesMarket Square.[05],[06] This event shocked everyone as it seemed like nothing less than annexation by Ulysses S Grant would happen! And boy did it! SoCal Territorial Governor James Buchanan called out 4 companies from Nebraska Mounted Infantry Battalion( later shortened Lincoln Regiment)to help protect City but no one knows how many died actually because no record exists today[07]. But we do know about something strange happened right afterwards...Aftermath Of Union InvasionOf Arkansas:[08] So things seem pretty quiet back home huh? Wrong again folks...On October 16th1862 two days after Union troops marched into town locals rioted turning weapons against their occupiers resulting in 5 dead+10 wounded plus several homes burned down,[09],[10],[11][12] exactly what you'd expect when your entire city turns against you just because some dude got richer overnight! Despite all this violence however local officials managed to broker a peace deal which allowed FORT SUMTER TO BE RELEASED WITHOUT ANY GAMES OR LOSSES TO INDEPENDENCE BUT WITH THE ONUS OF CIVIL WAR ON ALL PARTIES
