The Jackson Shooting Target Holder Company was founded in 1899 by two brothers, George and Harry Brown. The company manufactured and distributed shooting targets for the market. In 1927, the company merged with the National Shooting Sports Foundation to form the National Shooting Sports Foundation/National Rifle Association (NRA). At NRA headquarters in Aurora, Illinois, the target holders plaque reads: "In Memory of Our Brothers George and Harry Brown who united with NSSF to create NRA." TheBrowns were lifetime members of NRA. Target holders first became popularized in America during World War I when soldiers needed a way to hit moving targets at short range. After the war, shooters started using target holders as training tools for various skills such as pistol shooting and rifle hunting. In 1949, King Features Syndicate bought control of NRA from its founders Harry Brown and George Brown. In 1975-1976, King Features produced an advertising campaign entitled "America's possum" featuringimages of possums crawling over rifles that represented gun manufacturers' efforts to reduce dependence on animal proteins for ammunition production. These ads helped revive interest in target holders among American shooters. Jackson, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Jackson was George Aiken who came to the area in 1811. He and his family built a cabin on the east side of the river near where it crosses now US-Route 66. In 1812 they erected a log house on what is now Main Street. They named their settlement after James Kapp, an American Revolutionary War officer and delegate from that area to the State of Missouri. In 1821 Jonathan Mapes purchased land west of present day Main Street and built a log cabin on what is now Mapes Road. In 1830 he married Anna Barnes and renamed their home Barnes Home after Anna's mother, Elizabeth Barnes (1801-1867). They had five children: John (born 1830), Martha (born 1832), Jesse (born 1835), Sarah (born 1838) and Amos (born 1840). Jonathan Mapes died in 1865 and AnnaBarnes continued to live there until her death in 1937. The last child to survive infancy was Sarah Mapes who became Mrs. Orville Hogue when she married him in 1941; they continue to reside there today with six grandchildren living along with them all over America! One can only imagine how busy this old farm must have been during those early days when just one family could support so many people!

In the 1970s, plastic target holders became available, and they became even more popular because they are lightweight and easy to use. Today, metal target holders are still used occasionally, but plastic target holders are most common.

Jackson, Missouri is a town located in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2000 census. It was named after Jackson Purchase in 1803. The first settler in Jackson was John Prentice who arrived in 1810. He built a cabin on the east side of the river and called it "Prentice's Bluff." In 1814 he married Sarah Parish and they moved to what is now downtown Jackson. They had one child, Nancy whom they named for their daughter-in-law Sarah Parish from Illinois. In 1830 Isaac Hogue bought land near present day downtown Jackson and started farming there. In 1831 he married Mary Atherton and founded the town of Atherton on his land which later became part of downtown Jackson. In 1861 Jno. Brough erected a small structure on Main Street which served as the first courthouse in Jackson. The courthouse burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt two years later with help from the American Express Company store situatons across the street from where it once stood (now part of Interstate 44). A post office called "Atherton" was established at this location on December 12, 1870, and remained in operation until November 5, 1906; when it was renamed "Jackson".
