In 1860, when Abraham Lincoln won reelection over Stephen Douglas through an electoral vote plurality rather than majority rule, he decided to move his campaign headquarters from Springfield to Jefferson City; this decision helped ensure Lincoln's victory overDouglas nationally and helped solidify his position as one of America's most popular presidents during his two terms in office.
