Kennett, Missouri is a small town in north-central Missouri, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Warren County. The town was named for Colonel George Kennett, who had settled there in 1821. The first permanent settlers in Kennett were two families from Illinois, killed by Indians while hunting near the future town site. A group of men and boys led by Captain Nathan Hale went out to kill the Indian leaders and failed; they returned home with their scalps (Hale's brother having also been killed). So began what would be an enduring tradition in Kennett: The annual "Hale Hunting" celebration on or around July 4th in which residents dress up like Indians and go hunting with Captains Nathan Hale and John Hays at Hare's Hill Ranch close to present-day Kennett. In 1827, Mormon missionaries called at Kennett seeking converts and bought land from local farmers for a mission station. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Nauvoo after their mainesville headquarters south of Carthage (now Independence). In 1830, when Joseph Smith founded Mormonism here as his new religion, he ordered all members of his church west of the Mississippi River to move to Nauvoo because that was where they would start their new kingdom on earth—a kingdom that would eventually include all American Zion (the Latter Day Saints movement throughout North America) under one roof! A store opened soon afterward along Main Street cornering First Avenue—a key retail corridor today still serving as a hub for local commerce but long ago replaced by modern shopping malls. By 1840 the population had swelled to over 2200 people; within 10 years several churches had been erected; hotels were opened; schools were started; general stores became available; railroad service arrived; jobs opened up for young people coming off farm labor or working odd jobs during those early days before we knew anything about computers or cell phone service! When Union General Ulysses S Grant moved through Warren County in 1865 conducting military operations against Confederate General Robert E Lee following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, much of northwest Missouri came under occupation including parts of Kennett including its largest concentration ever known east of the Rockies! The soldiers burned most everything they found here—-including furniture from homes—-and moved on leaving behind nothing but scars on this beautiful community! Occupation ended about 1870 when Union troops withdrew back across the river leaving behind much cleared land for development including many mills which continued operation until 1940s when they switched to oil production becoming one of America's leading gas producers (today still extant thanks to contributions from proponents such as Governor Jay Nixon!). Today part of downtownKennett remains largely untouched despite being primarily residential with less than 1% commercial activity although some light industrial use continues along 3rd Street just past Main Street park which contains an old grist mill dating back to around 1800 etc etc etc...?
Kennett was founded in 1837 byCaptain James Kennett as a dry goods store. The town grew rapidly and, by 1857, it had a post office, school and several stores. In the 1860s, the town became an agricultural center due to its location near the Illinois River. The early farmers raised corn, wheat and other crops; later they developed a dairy industry that produced cheese, eggs and milk. The town also became home to one of the first black families in Missouri when John Fenton moved from Kentucky to Kennett in 1865. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Kennett was hit hard by economic recessionary conditions. It lost its textile manufacturing jobs in 1901 and 1907 while other nearby towns experienced similar declines. However, after World War I brought new jobs into the area, Kennet bounced back quickly thanks to its support for military production. Afterward, it regained some of its former industrial prominence through various businesses such as construction (including a large paper mill), real estate development (such as Stroudsburg Landing), marketing (particularly with respect to cigarettes) and education (including becoming one of the original schools in Missouri). The city's population peaked at over 50,000 around 1930 but has since declined modestly due mainly to suburban growth within walking distance of central business district activities which have outstripped local job growth rates
