Kirkwood, Missouri, is a small town located in Randolph County, Missouri. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Kirkwood is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Kirkwood was Levi English in 1824. He and his family moved to this location from Illinois. By 1830, there were twenty-six people living in the community. The first school was built in 1832 by Mr. English and Mrs. Frenchwick; it served as a day care for local children until 1840 when it became an academy. In 1847, the present church was built by Reverend James Coker and Drs. Henson and Stockton; it has been used continuously since that time as the only temple of its type in Randolph County In 1865, Confederate General John Sumpter retreated from Fort Donelson after a major victory over Union General Ulysses S Grant near Jacksonport Landing on the Arkansas River As soon as news of General Sumpter's retreat reached Kirkwood residents, they rose up against him with angry mobs known as "Sumpters' Men." Many homes were burned down during this period as violence ensued between citizens and soldiers loyal to both sides In 1865, two years afterGeneral Sumpter's surrender at Vicksburg, Kirkwood had a population of just 124 (less than one percent of all Randolph County) Kirkwood experienced some post-war growth due to military families moving here after being discharged from service or returning home late During World War II: The United States Navy set up Camp Butler here between 1942 and 1944 while construction activities for Shreveport Naval Air Station took place nearby This camp housed approximately 2200 sailors who lived aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 74) which transported troops and supplies around Louisiana Bayou during World War II

In 1902, the railroad arrived and changed much of the economic landscape of the area; by 1920, Kirkwood had become an agricultural center with a small school and several businesses. However, during World War II it became one of the few American towns to support military service as part of General George S. Patton's Operation Overlord (in which Missouri played a critical role). After the war ended, many jobs disappeared as production shifted to other countries; however, Kirkwood has bounced back in recent years with new development such as an elementary school and a high school. Today, Kirkwood is known for its nightlife - primarily its bars and clubs - which attract people from all over central Missouri.

The community rapidly developed due to its location along the Illinois River and its natural resources such as lumber and corn. By 1870, Kirkwood had over 1,000 residents. By 1910, it had shrunk to just 100 residents due to economic reasons. However, it continued to grow through the years due to Des Moines & Pacific Railroad development and growth in nearby Jacksonville. In 1923, the Kirkwood Post Office closed because of competition from Jacksonville's post office. However, the population of Kirkwood grew again through new development until it reached its peak around 1960 with 1,500 residents. Since then, the population has slowly declined although there are still a few hundred people living in Kirkwood today
