Lebanon, Missouri is a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lebanon had a post office from 1871 to 1875. The town was platted in 1881 by Lorenzo and Anna Hahn. The name was derived from Mount Lebanon in present day Syria. The first settler in Lebanon was Isaac Kapp and his family who arrived around 1842. They built a cabin on the banks of the White River about north of where Lebanon now stands. Kapp may have been named for Florian Kapp von der Heyden who commanded an Austrian brigade during the Mexican War (1846). A log cabin known as "Kapp's Cabin" still stands near the intersection of US 63 and MO 158 outside of town limits today, used as a museum operated by Friends of Lebanon Historical Park Incorporated since 1995. Another early settler were David Jubb and his family who arrived in 1840 from Ohio; they built a log cabin on what is now northeast corner of UK Highway 24 & MO 158 just east of present day Lebanese Road/US 63 crossing locality boundaries which still stand to this day adjacent to their farmstead complex today dating back to that time! A few years later Greenback Presbyterian Church also set up shop here with members coming all over into Clay Country until eventually building their home on Topeka Avenue southwest of town limits opposite current day Springdale Drive! A school bus stop directly across Topeka Avenue from where church buses park currently provides convenient access for students nearby without having to walk any distance! In 1906 Lewis' grocery store opened up - it became one of many local businesses that grew along with village growth throughout much of Southeast Missouri during this period!! By 1920 there were six stores total with two additional lumberyards located within easy driving distance including one just south east off MO 158 next to current day Dutch Lane aforesaid!!! Today only three remaining Roses Hardware – two west side locations (one closed circa 2009) and one east side location near junction OF I-55 & MO 159 which has been vacant since its closure about 2005 - remain active business enterprises within thriving community surrounding them providing local support services critical for economic vitality and overall qualityof life hereabouts!! Thanks largely to these successful defiance efforts against seemingly insurmountable odds thru committed marketing ingenuity !! Home rule ordinances adopted earlier this decade repealed numerous zoning regulations decades ago limiting potential long term viability@ commercial development opportunities unique to neighboring townsfolk thereby allowing more mixed use redevelopment while preserving essential community assets vital both economically and aesthetically !! This success story tells volumes regarding character strengths hard work ethic coupled with determined leadership - qualities sorely lacking elsewhere contemporary @ much greater cost$$$
