In 1839, Maryland Heights was a small village in southern Missouri. It had been founded by Gabriel White and his family some years earlier, and they had named it after the Heights of Baltimore, where Gabriel's father had grown up. The village consisted of just a few hundred residents when it was founded, but it grew rapidly as settlers arrived from surrounding states and established themselves there. By 1850, the population of Maryland Heights numbered over two thousand. The town's first settler, Samuel Barrett, built a house on what is now Main Street. He also erected a blacksmith shop and a store. In 1852, he married Sarah Goode and moved to Maryland Heights with her. They continued to live there until their death in 1924. The townspeople soon began to build churches and other public buildings. In 1868, they donated land for the first Methodist church in Missouri. The building was completed the following year and served as the town's church until 1959 when it was replaced by the current parish church on State Street. The town also became an important center for gun manufacturing; several local companies produced firearms such as Colt pistols and rifles (the latter being made at the same factory that produced Confederate battleflags). Gunmakers like Samuel Barrett & Co., Johnnie Shields & Bros., Isham & Vernon (owned by Isham himself), Isaac Chappell & Sons (owned by Chappell's son-in-law), Elisha Gray & Son (owned by Gray's widow) were all active intown during this time period. As gun production increased in nearby Springfield or Qualityville during this period, Maryland Heights slowly lost its importance as a center for arms manufacture; guns eventually started being manufactured more efficiently closer to Springfield or Qualityville whence demand came.( See image below) However, because of its close proximity to Springfield and its many potential customers/suppliers/workers/, Maryland Heights remains an important cultural attraction today especially among those who enjoyed hunting or fishing in rural Missouri during this time period.(See map above)
