Maryville, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Highland, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Maryville was Levi Coffin on October 14, 1836. He and his wife were the only white people to live in what would become Maryville. The town received its name from General James Doolittle's Christmas present to his family when they moved from upstate New York in 1837: "A rich land for a poor family." In 1838, General Nathaniel Banks visited the area and recommended that settlers move eastward into what is now Illinois due to lack of water supplies hereabouts. So instead of moving westward as planned, many people transferred their properties northeast to Maryville through purchases or gifts from friends and relatives. In 1840 John Capps donated land for a church which later became St. Andrews Episcopal Church (now known as First United Methodist Church). Maryville is a small town in northwest Missouri, United States. The population was 1,402 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. In 1827, when wagon trains first arrived in this area, they named it "Villa Maria." The post office was established in 1828 and the first store opened in 1830. By 1840, Maryville had a school and two churches. In 1861, after Confederate forces destroyed Union General Robert E. Lee's army at First Manassas National Battlefield near Richmond, Virginia (the bloodiest battle of the American Civil War), Union General Ulysses S. Grant decided to retreat from Maryland Heights to move his command southward along I-45 within sight of Richmond so as not to implicate himself with Confederate sympathies. On July 16th, 1861, Union Major General James Fenton ordered Captain George A. McClellan's 4th Iowa Infantry Regiment (2nd Brigade) under Lieutenant Colonel John Crouch to march north on I-45 towards Maryville on orders fromGeneral Grant; however upon arrival there they found that all roads leading into town were closed by Confederate artillery fire which had been trained on Fort Smith Road northeast of town; McClellan's brigade faced columns of Confederates trenches dug across several miles of road bed just east of town line before finally being able to reach US-62 about ten miles west of Maryville on July 17th following a five day journey through difficult terrain and intense artillery shelling by both sides The Battle for Maryville began at 6 p.m., July 17th when Confederate Brigadier General John Pemberton attacked McClellan's brigade located southeast corner lot 3 block North Main Street between Highways 50 and 54 Streets; simultaneously three regiments from brigades commanded by Brigadier Generals Alpheus Poe (4th Missouri Infantry Regiment), Andrew Johnson Blair (5th Arkansas Infantry Regiment), and Israel Putnam Richardson (1st New York militia) assaulted one hundred fifty men strong UNC battery supported by four cannons while other companies skirmished around buildings fronting Main Street; however despite inflicting severe casualties upon their opponents Company H driven back over open ground behind buildings before retiring under heavy fire followed by other companies who retired behind trees resulting in eight killed and twenty wounded including Captains George A McClendon[7]and David Ransom[8], Lieutenants John Matson[9], Samuel Scudder[10], James Wickersham"[11], Ensigns Abram Dickson(12)[13] Samuel Coffin(14)[15]), William Lacey(16)[17] with Corporal Isaac Bicknell filling in for Sergeant Isaac Hodges who lost his left arm during this engagement fatalities include: Captain McClendon: Killed instantly as hit by cannonball while trying to retire after being repulsed; Lieutenance Matson: Wounded moderately but not fatally ; Ensigns Coffin: Wounded very severely - captured and taken prisoner ; Private Bicknell: Died later from effects of wounds received Captain George A McClendon : Killed instantly as hit by cannonball while trying to retire after being repulsed ; Lieutenance Matson : Wounded moderately but not fatally ; Ensigns Coffin : Wounded very severely - captured and taken prisoner Private Isaac Bicknell : Died later from effects of wounds received

After the American Civil War, Missouri became a free state. The Reconstruction Era began in 1868 and ended in 1877. In 1879, Missouri passed a bill legalizing white slavery. This was the first time that such a law had been passed in any United States state.
