Moberly was founded in 1843 by Captain George Moberly and his wife Margaret McGillis. The first post office in Moberly was established in 1845. The community name commemorates General Lafayette's visit to Moberly on October 3, 1825. In 1863, General John Custer came through Moberly on his way to fight Little Bighorn during the American Civil War; he stopte here for lunch and spent the night at Mrs. Moberly's home before continuing his journey northward. The railroad arrived in early 1870 and soon added jobs to the population of Moberly proper (now east of town). By 1880, most residents were farmers or mechanics with a few shops and businesses clustered around Main Street. A high school was opened in 1893 and became one of the largest schools in western Missouri until it closed in 1942 due to World War II bombing raids that destroyed much of downtown St Louis. After World War II ended, many people left for new opportunities elsewhere within Missouri or outside of Missouri altogether; however some continue to live there today as retirees or transient workers from other communities within Clay County when necessary but not permanently living there full-time In 1969-1970 a campaign called "Keep Our Schools Open" began which successfully pressured then-Clay County Executive Donny Hoyer into opening two more high schools – Central High School (opened 1970) and Ozark Valley High School (opened 1971). These schools have since become known as "the Three Musketeers". From 1970 until 2002 only one elementary school remained open: Park Ridge Elementary School which serves students from kindergarten through third grade Since 2002 all three high schools have been closed down with no plans to reopen them; they are currently being used as libraries/community centers although their functions vary greatly

Moberly has been Cameronsville for over three hundred years and was once known as "The City on the Hill". Moberly was platted in 1835 by Captain John C. Mason and his brother-in-law George Stephenson, who patented the town name in 1838. The first post office was established in 1846, and the first store opened in 1847. The community became a village in 1889. The present downtown area dates to 1912 when two blocks of Main Street were constructed between Seventh and Eighth Streets. A school building was erected on Post Road east of Seventh Street in 1914; it burned down in 1951 but was rebuilt and used until 1992. Moberly is named after Colonel Jonathan Moberly (1756-1830), an officer with the United States Geological Survey who mapped most of Missouri during the 1830s and 1840s. He served as assistant surveyor general from 1823 to 1830, when he resigned to become a justice of the peace for Osage County, Kansas Territory
Moberly, Missouri was founded in 1837 by John A. Moberly and his wife Elizabeth. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who served as the 34th President of the United States. In 1870, Moberly became a city and it has since grown to be one of the largest cities in Missouri.
