Moberly, Missouri is a small town in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Moberly is located on the eastern edge of Boone County and is bordered by Bozeman to the north, Liberal to the east, Independence to the south, and Pittsburg to the west. Moberly was founded in 1833 as a post office under the name "Ozark". It became a town in 1851 when it split from neighboring Pittsburg. The original plat for Moberly laid out by James Dickey in what is now Boone County. In 1830 John Sowers settled in present-day Moberly after traveling through Arkansas and Texas on his way westward. He named his place "Ozark" after an Indian chief who had been killed near that spot some years earlier. In 1836 Jno Hagedorn erected a sawmill here which continued operations until 1840 when it was destroyed by fire. A new sawmill was built about this time by John Fenton and operated until 1865; it would be replaced several times over its lifetime with different types of equipment before finally being abandoned in 1976. In 1861 Moberly became one of twelve towns included within Johnson County when that county was formed from parts of Butler and Platte counties. The first courthouse here was built in 1871; it would be replaced several times before being abandoned in 1978. The first school building herewas built around this time too; it would serve as both a school and mill town until closure in 1925 following mercury poisoning problems associated with its use as an aluminum smelter during World War II (it reopened as a library). A new school building arrived here around 1960 which would remain operational until 1983; it served as both a high school and community center until closing again following fire damage in 1992. A branch ofthe Missouri Pacific Railroad came through Moberley soon afterward providing access to various markets throughout northwest Missouri while also serving as an important link between eastern MO and central Kansas City; however, due to low passenger traffic demand during this period (and competition from other railroad lines) rail service ended completely within Moberley sometime later Official website: moberlysociety
Moberly was founded in 1811 by John Moberly and his brother James. The city was named after Capt. George Moberly, who fought with the Missourians in the War of 1812. The city grew quickly and by 1830 it had a population of over 200 people. In 1836, the United States Congress created the County of Posey to encompass all of present day Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming. As a result of this change in congressional boundaries, Moberly lost its status as a county seat but continued to grow rapidly due to its location on the border between these new counties. By 1850, Moberly had reached 1,500 residents and by 1870 it had grown to 3,000 people. In 1875, Moberly became a town when it was incorporated as part of Lawrence County. It experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to its location on routes connecting Chicago with Omaha and Denver and its access to natural resources such as coal and oil. Despite this growth, however, Moberly never attained great renown as an agricultural or commercial center due to its limited infrastructure and lack of transportation options.
